Monty Hall paradox explained

A couple of days ago a friend of mine, after having watched «21» film, asked me to explain her the very well known Monty Hall problem (which the film happened to popularise beyond notoriety) in nutshell layman’s terms, for those not acquainted with the theory of probabilities. As it was 2:30 am on the clock and I was in a state of zombie, I have outright despised the very idea of doing so and just pointed her to a Wikipedia page instead, which supposedly explains it all (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monty_Hall_problem). Only after having a closer look at this wikipage myself, I suddenly realised that not only it fails to explain the matter crystal clear simply, but complicates it beyond any necessity. Not surprisingly, my friend replied me saying she got even more perplexed after reading it. This morning, while having a breakfast and still happy to oblige, I sketched out a simple table (in fact, two of them) that clarifies it once and for all, cut and clear, Occam’s razor sharp. After having initial reluctance for a while, I finally decided to put it here, so at least none of my friends trouble me with this same problem again. Here you go, the simplest possible way of solving Monty Hall paradox.

Monty Hall paradox solution

Cyprus: buyout

Continuing the pun and being totally politically incorrect, Russian imperialist way, it would be nice to buy out Cyprus completely with all its debts and trimmings at a discount price and convert it to 84th region of Russia. It’s dirt-cheap now and very well worth the investment — why not to try?

On top of that, we could potentially negotiate sale of Turkey’s holdings — 38% (wanna Syria, guys?), and minority stake from Britain — 2% (should be a no-brainer), owning the entire island. Sounds really compelling.

Deoffshorization, you say. Sure thing. This buyout would solve this too, without any hassle, by simply reverting the dirty authoritarian Russian money (which Europe is so obsessed now to expropriate for the benefit of saving its own arse) to there it belongs, The Mother Russia.

Also, it would allow to relocate the Black See Fleet to the sunny coast of Mediterranean sea from Sevastopol, without paying a single rouble more to those greedy gas-price-rise-reluctant Ukranians. Keep it simple, stupid.

No downsides, just mezze and sunshine.

Cyprus: Robbing Good

«People with less than 100,000 euros in Cypriot bank accounts will have to pay a one-time tax of 6.75%, while those with more will have to pay 9.9%.» [1]

One must be really insane, delirium tremens way, in order just to start fantasizing about expropriating deposits on a national scale, non-nationals included. For there is no surest way of depriving a given country of foreign direct investments and government legitimacy for years ahead.
Borderline suicidal, that is.

«»There is a general political sentiment that it is not acceptable to be bailing out a country, and thereby putting European taxpayers’ money at risk, to basically protect Russian depositors in Cypriot banks,» he said.» [1]
«There are concerns around Europe about whether all that money was legitimately acquired and also about how effective Cyprus is in dealing with money laundering.» [1]
«The EU decision to impose a levy on bank deposits may have been motivated by a belief that a lot of the money in Cypriot banks belongs to Russian money-launderers, BBC business editor Robert Peston says.» [2]

Grand fucking Prix. Applaudissement s’il vous plait! Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, adapted to real life, goes to the government of Cyprus.
Must feel good, huh? Why don’t we rob those oil-drunk sick-rich Russians since they are all undemocratic delinquent money launderers anyway.
Feeling good, like Robin Hood. Robbin’ bad for good.
Robbing Good, that is.

Irony is not lost, reputation is.
